WELCOME TO HOUSTON PETS ALIVE!
HPA!’s mission is to rescue animals most at risk of euthanasia, reduce the number of unwanted animals, and find the animals forever families.
Where is the need?
There are 1.2 million stray animals and two open-intake shelters in Houston. We work with BARC and Harris County Animal Shelter to increase live outcomes through robust adoption programs, high-volume spay and neuter partnerships, and community education. We are determined to make Houston the largest no-kill city in the country.
What do we do?
We’re not your average rescue. We act as a safety net for our municipal shelters, to save the animals who have no other options. Every day we receive a list of animals who are at risk of euthanasia. We save as many animals as we can, between space in our shelter and in foster homes. We know that saving lives is a community effort, and we’re committed to saving the lives that others won’t- which is why we specifically take neonatal or “bottle baby” kittens, nursing moms, dogs and cats with illnesses or injuries, and those with behavior issues. We are committed to developing programs alongside our local shelters, and together, we will work to save even more lives.
Who is Houston Pets Alive?
Houston Pets Alive! is a 501(c)3 organization (EIN 46-5455638) founded by Andrea Birkelbach in 2014. We are comprised of animal loving volunteers and staff who never stop working to save the next life.
