Just last week, a heartbreaking call came in about a mama dog and her eight newborn puppies had been abandoned in a park. Golden, as we’ve named her, was doing everything she could to keep her tiny babies alive, but the reality is that this vulnerable family stood no chance on their own. With no shelter, no food, and no protection from the elements, their future was dangerously uncertain.

Thankfully, a partner shelter stepped in to rescue them, but with so many animals already in need, they quickly reached out to us for help. We knew we couldn’t say no.

On Friday, Houston Pets Alive! welcomed Golden and her week-old puppies into our care. Nine fragile lives, each completely dependent on us for survival. Golden is exhausted but still fiercely devoted to her babies, and now she can finally rest knowing that she doesn’t have to do it alone.

But the journey ahead is long. Providing round-the-clock nutrition, veterinary care, vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries, and safe housing for a family of nine is no small task. These little ones will be with us for weeks, if not months, before they’re ready for homes of their own.
