Storm Preparedness for Pets

As Houstonians, we know hurricane season means keeping an eye on the weather and being ready to act fast. As pet parents, it’s just as important to make sure your four-legged family members are included in your emergency plan.

It is crucial to be prepared before disaster strikes. Here’s how you can ensure your pets stay safe if a storm hits.

Build a Pet Emergency Kit

Make sure you have the following items ready and easily accessible:

  • At least 5–7 days of food and water for each pet

  • Bowls, leashes, collars, and carriers or crates

  • Medications and copies of veterinary records

  • ID tags and updated microchip info

  • Waste bags, litter, and litter box

  • A blanket, toy, or item with familiar scent for comfort

  • Recent photos of your pet (in case you’re separated)

Have a Safe, Pet-Friendly Place to Go

If you need to evacuate:

  • Don’t leave pets behind. If it’s unsafe for you, it’s unsafe for them.

  • Identify pet-friendly hotels, shelters, or friends/family you can stay with.

  • Keep your pet’s carrier or leash by the door so you can act quickly.

💡 Tip: Use apps or websites like BringFido.com or PetFriendlyTravel.com to locate pet-friendly accommodations in advance.

Keep Identification Up to Date

Make sure your pet’s collar tags are legible and current, and their microchip is registered with the correct contact info. This is critical in the event you get separated.

Stay Calm and Comforting

Pets can pick up on your anxiety. During a storm, try to remain calm and speak to your pets in a soothing voice. Provide familiar bedding or toys to help reduce stress.

Know Who to Call

Keep a list of important numbers handy:

  • Your vet

  • A nearby 24/7 emergency vet

  • Animal shelters and rescue groups in your area

  • HPA!’s emergency contact if you’re fostering

Be Their Lifeline

Storms are scary, but with preparation, your pets can weather them safely by your side. Take the time now to put your emergency plan in place—it could make all the difference when it matters most.

Stay safe and protect the animals who rely on you.
